Minor Boys Championship

St. Brigid’s 2-15, Strokestown 0-9

For the second year in a row, St. Brigids minors are through to the county final, and one game away from retaining the title. This follows an impressive display in defeating a strong Strokestown team away on Sunday last.

A slow start saw Brigids fall three points to no score behind and it took Paul McGrath to make his way up from wing back to open the scoring. Points were traded for the next five minute until Brigids went on a run themselves with scores from Donnacha Gately, Ciaran Sugrue and a free from Brian Derwin to draw level. Brigids pushed ahead after this and went in at the break 0-8 to 0-5 points ahead.

Despite conceding the opening score of the half, Brigids again took control with Sugrue, Gately and Derwin keeping the score board ticking over. However it wasnt until the 45th minute that Brigids managed to pull away. A good move from the forwards saw the ball come across the square and was finished to the net by Cian McBrearty. The game was finished off five minutes later when Ciaran Sugrue finished to the net to leave Brigids 12 points to the good.

The final score line read St. Brigids 2-15, Strokestown 0-9. Well done to all involved, and we look forward now to the county final.

Team: Seamus Smith, Keelan O' Conner, Eoin Minagh, Gary Daly,  Pearce FrostCian McBrearty (1-1), Paul McGrath (0-1), John Leonard, Niall Murray ,Ian O' Rourke, Donnacha Gately (0-4 (1f)), Ruairí Smith, Eoin Egan, Ciarán Sugrue (1-4), Brian Derwin (0-5 (3f)).

U14 Boys Div 4 Final

St.Brigids 6-09, Elphin Ballinameen 1-04

At a sunny and pristine St.Dominics on Sunday last,  our U14 Div 4 team captured the Div 4 title after a brilliant performance in the final against a very talented and determined Elphin Ballinameen team. Having lost narrowly to Elphin earlier in the season, the lads were determined to go one better this time. From the throw in they went on the attack straight away and put the Elphin defence under enormous pressure. Great combination play and scores by Alex O’Donoghue, Brendan Murphy and Luke Whelan put us into an early lead, but Elphin replied with a breakaway goal to keep in touch. Sol Trundle, Robert Keenan, Luke Sylvestor, Eoin Reid and James Dillon continued to dominate around the midfield and the half forward areas and the scores continued to mount up. A brilliant goal by Andrew Sheffield, after another great move, put us into a 5-05 to 1-02 lead at half time.   In the 2ndhalf Elphin got a foothold around midfield and camped in the Brigids half. But the defence proved more than capable of dealing with everything that was thrown at them. Daniel Skene, Oran Benton and Michael Dillon were outstanding in the full back line and Matthew Samuals in goal was solid and dependable whenever called upon.  The half back line of Brian Armstrong, Cormac Meeley and Sean Minnock  defended brilliantly and  even managed to break forward regularly to support the forward line.  Despite incessant pressure for most if the second half, the defence restricted the Elphin to just 2 points over the half. Playing classic counter attacking football, Brigids scored a brilliant goal from Eoin Reid and 4 super points by Luke Sylvestor (2), Luke Whelan and B.Armstrong. Despite this, Elphin battled bravely to the end, but they just had no answer to the tenacious defending, long kick passing, intelligent movement and accurate finishing by the Brigids lads After the game, proud team captain Oran Benton, accepted the trophy on behalf of the team and the victory cavalcade was greeted with the obligatory Supermacs on arrival back to the club in Kiltoom. This was a great team performance and most of this squad can now look forward with confidence to the upcoming U13 Feile qualifying competition.  Other players that could not play on Sunday were Eanna McDonald (injured), Harry Griselan and Luke Murphy(unavailable), but all three contributed significantly to this team throughout the season.

Team and Scorers: M.Samuals, D.Skene, M.Dillon,  O.Benton, C.Meeley, B.Armstrong 0-1, S.Minnock, S.Trundle, J.Dillon, B.Murphy 2-01, E.Reid 1-0, L.Sylvestor0-02, R.Keenan, A.Sheffield 1-0, L.Whelan 0-3, A.O’Donoghue 2-02.

U12 Boys

Our Div 5 Under 12 team played Padraig Pearses in Kiltoom last Monday evening. On the evening the visitors proved to be much too strong for the home side and were comprehensiive winners.

An impressive opening from Brigids saw them go 1-2 to no score ahead after ten minutes. Two scores from Brian Derwin was followed by a well worked move that saw Eoin Minagh punch the ball over the line, with Tommy Glynn close by to ensure it crossed the white wash. However Castlerea stormed back into the game and after opening their account with a point got a goal of there own after 15 minutes. Paul McGrath and Eoin Egan points settled Brigids again. Further points were traded leaving the half time score at 1-7 to 1-4 in favour of Brigids.

The second half saw Brigids take control. Points from Donnacha Gately, Shane Cunnane and Ciaran Sugrue stretched Brigids advantage. Then a crucial 5 minutes. Three superb saves from Seamus Smith kept Castlerea from gaining a vital lifeline, and sub Eoin Derwin scored two cracking goals with his opening touches to leave the game out of Castlerea's reach. Another goal from Ciaran Sugrue finished the game leaving Brigids victorious on a scoreline of Brigids 4-15, Castlerea 1-7.
