St Brigid’s Minor Boys Notes, August 23rd 2015

On Saturday 15th August, our under 8 boys hosted a blitz and played teams from Roscommon Gaels, Clann na Gael, St Dominic’s and Padraig Pearse’s. Over 80 players took part in the blitz with all teams playing three games. There were some fantastic skills on show and the players were a credit to their clubs and their respective management teams. Thanks to everyone who participated in the blitz.

Our boys now look forward to their next blitz which takes place on Saturday August 29thin Ballyhaunis.

Our U-12s recorded two good wins in Division 1 of the U-12 Summer league in the last week. On Monday of last week, we recorded a good victory against St Ciaran’s in Fuerty. St Brigid’s built up a large score by half-time but credit to the home side, they continued to give our lads a good game of it until the very end. Final scoreline: St Brigid’s 7-9, St Ciaran’s 3-6. Panel v St Ciaran’s: Kevin Derwin, Shane Daly, Adam Donovan (1-0), Liam Hennelly, Daniel Meeley, James Goose, Thomas O’Brien (2-1), Daniel Keenan, Brian Nestor (2-3), Ronan Doyle (0-1), Oisin Canny, (2-3), Bryan Armstrong, Martin O’Grady, David Dolan, Eoghan Reid (0-1). St Brigid’s had their toughest game to date on Thursday last in the Division 1 league away to Strokestown. In an absorbing game where scores were at a premium, St Brigid’s led at the break by two points, 0-5 to 0-3. Strokestown didn’t give our boys an inch in the second half either and going into the closing stages, one point separated the sides with Brigid’s having the slim advantage. The crucial breakthrough came 5 minutes from the end when St Brigid’s goaled to put the side four ahead and end the excellent challenge by the home side. It was a game where our lads struggled at times but they showed excellent character to eventually prevail against a fine Strokestown team. Final scoreline, St Brigid’s 1-6, Strokestown 0-5. Panel v Strokestown: Kevin Derwin, Shane Daly, Adam Donovan, Liam Hennelly, Daniel Meeley, Micheal Sugrue, Thomas O’Brien (0-1), Daniel Keenan (0-1), Conor Hand (0-1), Brian Nestor (0-2), Ronan Doyle (0-1), Oisin Canny (1-0), Bryan Armstrong, Harry Griselain, Martin O’Grady, David Dolan. The St Brigid’s panel had a good work on Saturday last against visiting Mayo side Parke, who provided two good challenge games. Thank you to all the parents who helped provide the food to the visitors after the game. St Brigid’s were scheduled to have another Division 1 League game at home to Roscommon Gaels on Monday last, August 24th, 7.30 pm.
