ST BRIGID’S MINOR COMMITTEE NOTES, WEEK ENDING SUNDAY MAY 26th 2013
Minors: There are no scheduled fixtures until school examinations are over.
U-16s: There are no scheduled fixtures until school examinations are over.
U-14s: It was a tough week last week for the U-14s who played two games in the league. On Monday, they played St. Ciarans in Kiltoom and lost out to a very strong visiting team. On Thursday, they faced Strokestown at home and played very well, were only a point down at half-time. St Brigid’s continued to work very hard after the break but a strong breeze in the second half combined with a number of injuries didn’t help as Strokestown closed out the game to take the points. St Brigid’s had some really good performances and a number of younger players are starting to establish themselves. Squad: Daniel Sugrue, Mark Haran, Gary Daly, Keelan Connor, Pearse Frost, Tommy Glynn, Paul McGrath, Billy McDonnell, Eoin Egan, Ruairi Smith, Donnchadh Gately, Ciaran Sugrue, Tom O’Carroll, Seamus Smith, Ian O’Rourke Subs: Ted Brosnan, Ronan Campbell, Matthew Cochrane, Cian Daly, Jack Gartland, John Leonard, Adam Murtagh, Cathal O’Grady, Cathal Sweeney.
U-12s: The U-12s had an impressive win in their first game in Group C of the U-12 Football Spring League. Every player impressed as they defeated St Michaels on a score line of 1-17 to 2-7. Team: Ultan O’Rourke, Seán Trundle, Adam Flanagan, Evan Gallagher, Shane Kelly, Cormac Canny, Liam Egan, Shane Keenan, Ben Moran, Adam Samuels, Luke O’Rourke, Brian Monaghan, Shane Cunnane, Ruairdhí Fallon.
U-10s: St Brigid’s U-10s are taking part in their second ‘Go Games’ blitz taking place next Saturday from 11 am at the Clann na nGael club, Johnstown. Players will be notified of full details by their coaches during the week. The Community Games U-10 team qualified for the semi final of the Community Games on Thursday evening last with a good win over a very young and skilful Kilbride team. Final score line: Kiltoom/Cam 6-9, Kilbride 1-2. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, Kiltoom/Cam dominated possession early on but failed to put scores on the board. Eventually they found their range and scores from Thomas O’Brien, Daniel Keenan, Bobby Nugent, Shane Daly and Ronan Doyle put them into a commanding lead coming up to half time. Kilbride replied with two fine points from play. Kiltoom/Cam faced a strong wind in the second half but still managed to dominate possession. Further goals by Simon O’Boyle and Jamie Curley put the issue beyond doubt. Kilbride battled back bravely and managed to breach the Kiltoom/Cam rearguard for a fine goal and continued to put the defence under pressure. However, stout defending by Shane O’Boyle, Daniel Melia and Heather McGrane ensured that no further scores were conceded. Kiltoom/Cam finished strongly and added further points to run out comfortable winners. The defence was solid all through and limited the Kilbride forwards to very few scoring chances. Midfield dominated for long periods and provided a plentiful supply of ball into the forwards. The forwards all played well with Conor Hand, Aine McGrath, Amy Gallagher and Paddy Higgins particularly prominent. Kevin Derwin deserves a special mention for playing despite sustaining a painful injury prior to the game. The semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday, June 2nd in Ballyleague. Team and scorers: Harry Griselain, Abbie Murray, James Rourke, Marian Nolan, Daniel Meeley, Shane Daly(1-1), Shane O'Boyle, Bobby Nugent (1-3), Thomas O'Brien (1-3), Aine McGrath, Daniel Keenan (1-1), Kevin Derwin, Simon O'Boyle (1-0), Ronan Doyle (0-1),Conor Hand, Amy Gallagher, Heather McGrane, Oran Benton, Paddy Higgins, Jamie Curley (1-0).
U-8s: The U-8 squad commenced its playing season with its involvement in the 'Go Games' blitz in Fuerty last Saturday. St Brigid's played Clann Na nGael, St. Dominics and hosts St. Ciarans. With a great turnout from all players, there was some fantastic football played in a very competitive series of matches. St Brigid's had three teams competing in the blitz with all players showing great determination to win possession. All players showed their close ball skills and it was very evident early on that this group of boys were going to display All-Ireland winning attributes. Special mention has to be made of the fact that so many of these boys were trying to use both feet. This was a joy to watch and no doubt they will continue to improve on this. Niall Grehan, Garvan Dolan and Frankie Dolan all used their weaker side to win the All Ireland. The next blitz has been arranged for two weeks time and the management will give out details closer to the date. Squad: Adam Feeley, James O'Rourke, Cillian Curley, Brendan Murphy, Andrew Sheffield, Robert Keenan, Billy Ray Dolan, Jamie Fox, Kealan Casey, Noah Heavey, Sean Minnock, Jack Tully, Donnchadh o Reilly, Euan Joyce, Luke Slyvester, Niall Daly, Michael Heneghan, Niall Derwin, Cormac Meeley, Sean Tiernan, Jack Kinahan, Darragh McGrath, Roan Trundle, Thomas Muldoon.
