ST BRIGID’S MINOR COMMITTEE NOTES, WEEK ENDING SUNDAY JUNE 9th  2013

U-14s: St Brigid’s U-14s had two games in the last week. On Thursday, they played St Dominics in Kiltoom and produced a great performance, winning on a score line of 7-9 to 2-7. On Sunday last, they played Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult. It proved a tough game, and with a number of players missing, it was always going to be an uphill task. St Brigid’s fought very hard but were defeated by the home side. Training takes place this Tuesday, June 11th, at 7pm. U-10s: The U-10s take part in their second Football ‘Go Games’ blitz on Saturday next, June 16th, in Knockcroghery at 11 am. St Brigid’s will play a series of matches against the host club St Dominics, Clann na nGael and St Ciarans. On Tuesday evening, June 11th, the U-10s play a challenge game against Moate in Moate,  commencing at 7.30pm. Reports on the recent Community Games U-10 semi and county finals played on Sunday June 2nd in Ballyleague are now available on the club website.

U-8s: Our U-8s participated in their second ‘Go Games’ blitz hosted this time by Clann na nGael on Saturday last. The football played was in keeping with the weather. We had two teams taking part and it was great to see their continued growth in confidence on the ball. With some great movements, there was an exhibition of Senan Kilbride-style point taking. The boys and parents should be proud of the boys with regard to the respect shown to the referees on the day. Clann na nGael were very organised in hosting the blitz and we would like to thank them for the smooth running of the blitz. It is great to see so many boys turning up for these blitzes and we hope  they continue with training on Wednesday evenings at 7pmand Saturday afternoons at 12pm. U-8 team members who played in the ‘Go Games’ blitz last Saturday: Sam Mc Hugh, Ewan Joyce, Andrew Sheffield, Brendan Murphy, Niall Derwin, Cormac Meeley, Billy Ray Dolan, Robert Keenan, Thomas Muldoon, Noah Heavey, Donnchadh O’Reilly, Adam Feeley, Bryan Mc Dermott, Keelan Casey, Jimmy Carney, Niall Daly, Sean Tiernan, Jack Kinahan, Roan Trundle

Cumann na mBunscol Primary Schools: Large Schools competition: Following a fine victory against Boyle, the Ballybay National School team qualified for the large schools county final which takes place against Creagh this Wednesday evening, June 12th, Ballyleague at 5pm. The following semi-final match report versus Boyle was written by 6th class pupil Billy McDonnell: Last Thursday, June 6th in Kilbride, Ballybay NS and Boyle NS faced each other in an eagerly awaited battle. Ballybay started well with early scores from Ciarán Sugrue and an early goal by Ian O’Rourke which gave them breathing space. Further goals by Ian O’Rourke, Ciarán Sugrue and Liam Martin left the score at 4-7 to no score at half time. In the second half, Ballybay started well with points from Shane Cunnane, Pearse Frost and Billy McDonnell, leaving the score at 4-11 to no score.  Jack Scouler kicked a brilliant point from a difficult angle to add to Ballybay’s score.  The subs made a big difference with Jason Deering,  Matthew Cochrane, Cathal O’Grady, Daniel McDermott, Patrick O’Boyle, Jack  Gartland, Jack Scouler and Cian Daly all coming on. Boyle came back with two goals and one point but it was too late - Ballybay were through to the final! Ballybay NS squad: Eoghan Derwin, Mark Haran, Gary Daly, Paul Mc Grath (0-1), Pearse Frost (0-1), Shane Cunnane (0-2), Billy McDonnell (0-1), Ciarán Sugrue (1-5), Ruairi Smith (0-2),  Ian O’Rourke (2-0), Liam Martin (1-1). Subs:  Jason Deering,  Matthew Cochrane, Cathal O’Grady, Daniel McDermott, Patrick O’Boyle, Jack Gartland, Jack Scouler and Cian Daly. Two Teacher competition: Hard luck to the Curraghboy National School team who lost out in the two teacher county semi-final to an older and physically much bigger Grange NS side on a score line of 9-4 to 5-6. From the outset, the odds were stacked against Curraghboy who had only one boy in 6th class in comparison to their opponents who  had five. Despite their loss, this was a great campaign for the Curraghboy players and if they keep progressing, a county title is surely only around the corner. Curraghboy NS team: Carl Doran (capt.), Aaron Dolan, Adam Samuels, Cormac Canny (3-2), Ruairdhí Fallon (2-3), Diarmuid Glynn (0-1), Luke Powell. Subs: Michael Butler, Daniel Butler.
